Why gutters matter more in Denton than most places
Denton sits on the seam between the Eastern Cross Timbers' sandy loam and the blackland
clay that runs east of I-35. That clay is why half of North Texas deals with foundation
movement: it swells when it's soaked and shrinks hard in August. You can't do much about
the clay. You can do a lot about where the roof water lands on it, and on a typical Denton
roof a spring supercell can push hundreds of gallons an hour off the eaves.
Undersized or clogged gutters don't just overflow. Stand in the yard during a hard May
storm and you'll see it: a flat sheet of water pouring off the eave and landing right along
the slab line. We size gutters and downspouts for the rain we get here, not the
national-builder minimum, and we route the discharge away from the foundation instead of
into the flower bed against the wall. That's what a local gutter company should be doing
for a Denton house, and it's what we do.
Three kinds of Denton houses
- Older neighborhoods. Homes around the Oak-Hickory Historic District and near the Square have deep eaves and big trees over them. We run 6" gutter and oversized downspouts where the canopy calls for it.
- New construction. Builder-grade gutters in the newer developments off US-380 and Loop 288 are usually the 5" minimum with too few downspouts. Most of our calls from around Rayzor Ranch are upgrades, not repairs.
- Hail country. You hear it start on the roof at night and know you'll be looking at the gutters in the morning.
